Why isn't my car registration being recognised/why can't I find my car?

  • I’m very frustrated
    I have bought a new car from Skoda. Collected on 10th May. As it's a brand new model, I have so far only been able to insure it via Skoda insurance (currently on free one-week insurance). Previous contact with confused.com said once the car was registered, I would be able to get a quote but it doesn't recognise the car even when I input the Reg No. It's frustrating as Skoda charge £103 more for the old model (which mine has replaced) than the cheapest I was able to find online. I want to be able to cancel the normal annual Skoda insurance before it kicks in after the one week free I have but at this rate i can't!

    I was told several weeks ago when I first tried to get quotes for this new model that once I had the registration, this would enable you to get correct details but it doesn't! I have now had the car since 10th May but other than Skoda's own insurance I can't insure with anyone else and I am being forced to pay over the odds. Confused.com certainly isn't living up to it's ads!

    The registration details came up, yet it would not accept the selected details to go to the next page, no matter what I chose. It still wanted the vehicle details (even though that were displayed). I even selected the unknown reg option and could not advance further. It is very frustrating!

  • My car is found with 1396 CC engine by confuse.com , however the DVLa registartion sheet say is 1118cc L auto.

    Looking at cars and getting quotes on confused.com, interested in one car but when i type in the reg number it comes up as 16v when it is only 8v. When i type in the correct specs manually (8v etc.) i get a very good quote, and when i use the reg. number to enter the incorrect specs i get much higher quotes! help!
    • If you are certain that the car is an 8v model and not a 16v model, then by entering the correct information into the website manually rather than using the registration number you should have more accurate prices returned than the incorrect model. You can insert the registration number before purchasing the policy when you proceed to the insurance provider's website without altering the correct model of your car.

    Every other car is there. I've had this car for over 3 years, had 3 separate insurances, and I've had no problems identifying the car. I've had many other quotes within that period, all found my car with no problems, but I am CONFUSED.COM myself now!

    I can't even go direct now because all the insurers have recognised my details, so I can't get an on-line quote and I can't go direct to get 10% on-line quote off!

    The Sukuki Swift Sport model is not recognised within the Suzuki drop down menu. I have also entered 3 different registration numbers of Swift Sport models that are presently being advertised by local car dealers, these numbers are not recognised by Confused.     Thanks for posting.

    As stated above, we source our vehicle registration details from a DVLA provider, but these might not always be 100% accurate as it can depend on when the system has been updated.

    When you’ve entered your registration details, if your car hasn’t been returned or has been returned incorrectly, you can then select ‘No’ and indicate that you don’t know your car registration. This will allow you to enter your car details manually.

    If you are unable to locate your car by manually entering the details, we will presently be unable to assist you with insurance quotes at this time.

    It appears that most, if not all of the BMW Alpina range simply doesn't exist, nor can the cars be found via their Reg number, which puts you into a circular problem as the car just isn't on the list.

    Can't progress further if the model isn't known, or the entire range!

  • I am also experiencing the problem of incorrect data recorded for my vehicle and would like to know which organisation is responsible for inputting this info. It clearly states on the UK registration that my car is diesel yet it comes up as petrol. Also the model is incorrect as my car is an Opel CDTi Ecoflex (just like the vauxhall) and not a Comfort which I have never heard of. The individual who is employed and paid to do this work needs to be fired as it is causing problems for me obtaining insurance in order to get my tax disc.

    You can also try entering your car details manually -
    If you’ve entered your registration details and your car hasn’t been returned or has been returned incorrectly, you can then select ‘No’ and indicate that you don’t know your car registration. This will allow you to enter your car details manually.

    It can help at this point, if possible, to have your vehicle registration documents to hand in order to ensure that the correct information is entered, as the year of manufacture does not always fit the year that the car was first purchased.

    If, after entering your details manually, you are still unable to find your car, then unfortunately we won’t be able to help you obtain a quote on this occasion.

  • Well done JEREMY, this lot realy are USELESS, I tried to insure my ELECTRIC VAN about 5 years ago with this stupid confused .com they realy are STUPID.
    I have been ELECTRIC motoring for many years long before the NISSAN LEAF came into being, I now own one of these exelent vehicles and gues who NEVER ENVEN BOTHERED WITH WITH confused .com yep ME, wouldn't give them the time of day, WHY DONT THEY SAY OUTRIGHT, WE DONT INSURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES instead of this cant find your registration number crap, the vehicles are ALL ON THE D V L A database they have to be in order that they may be TAXED and of course insured, I think what this lot are doing is in fact ILEGAL by saying they can't find your registration number, best of luck, cheers HARRY MORRIS.

    Well this whole DVLA update crap is just that, crap. We have just imported a vehicle from Italy, a Lancia Delta 2008 M-Jet. However after a complete debarcle with DVLA it is now showing on all of the DVLA databases, Tax MOT etc. However it shows up on none of the insurance databases. We were told that it would after 7 days once the system was updated. So we waited, now bear in mind this car is IDENTICAL to a Chrysler Delta, but that was not manufactured here until 2011. So we are now in a peculiar situation. We are absolutely unable to get insurance from anyone, as when we give the registration we are told "it does not exist" we explain the situation, and are told no problem and we go through all of the details, and get the same answer, is that the Martini? Intergrali? NO YOU CRETINS, they were produced in 1998 not 2008, we explain that it is a Chrysler Delta and they tell us no because they were not produced until 2011. We then inevitably go through to an underwriter, who then tells us our car does not exist. Well it does I can see it through the bloody window. Despite millions being built outside the UK, apparently this car has never existed. Then they state oh well we can dummy group it, and then they all decide they can't. I am not talking about a vehicle that is going to rearrange your face when you accelerate, it's a really dull diesel.

    I guess what I am trying to say is that this country is leading the world with insurance databases which for the most part work perfectly, but my god, if you fall into a crack, your screwed, no one wants to actually take responsibility for it, and no one seems to give a toss about it. Insurance companies blame, as the posts from confused.com states, the DVLA database, well no it's not, and DVLA state it's down to the insurance companies, WTF? Catch 22.

    We are now six months down the line from the car coming on to UK soil, it's taken that long to get this far and now we look like we are stuck, with no one to go to and a car that is impossible to insure despite being legal in every other way.

  • Perhaps I should simply get a low loader, and physically take the car to one of the insurance call centers so that the underwriter can actually see it out his window, then maybe, just maybe they will stop telling me that the car can't exist because their database tells them it does not exist. Seriously do you think I am calling to get insurance on a car that is nothing but a figment of my imagination?

  • In retrospect, I would advise anyone thinking of importing a car, as I was thinking about importing an american car, which has never existed in Europe. However after this I have decided that it is far more practical to simply quit work, pack up my things and instead of moving the car to me, i will simply move me to the car. It will save me both time and money, and I will never have to hear that annoying "all our clerks are busy at the moment" DVLA message which quite frankly makes me want to rip off my fingers so I can no longer dial their number. I am normally a patient and compassionate man but after all of this, I could kick a kitten through a fan.

      I have laughed while reading your post as it is exactly my situation currently. I have imported a renault scenic from Belgium, I have the UK registration number and have been through all that painful process of imported car registration. And I am now stuck because my car model is from 2009 and has been released only in 2010 in UK...So it does not appear on any data base

    Thank you for posting. I am very sorry to hear that you have experienced this problem with an imported vehicle.

    I have checked the Confused.com database and I can see that we do have your exact vehicle listed. I am very sorry about that.

    I can confirm that we do list both the Chrysler Delta and the Lancia Delta, however, we only have the Chrysler model manufactured from 2011 onwards and the Lancia model from 1980 up to 1994.

    If you could please email communications@confused.com confirming the registration number, the exact make and model the car should be noted as, the year of manufacture, the transmission type (manual/auto), the fuel type and the engine size, I will then pass this information on to the motor team so that we can look into this further and add your vehicle to our database if possible.
